Brass & Coppers Anti Bacterial Properties

One interesting fact has emerged during the Covid-19 global situation is that copper, and it’s alloys like brass, kills bacteria and viruses. When a microbe lands on an uncoated copper surface, the copper releases ions, which are electrically charged particles. Those copper ions blast through the outer membranes and destroy the whole cell.

Studies have shown the material to kill a long list of microbes, including norovirus, MRSA, some staph bacteria, virulent strains of E. coli and coronaviruses possibly including the novel strain currently causing the COVID-19 pandemic. Initial tests are suggesting it is present for 4 hours, much shorter than multiple days on material like plastic and stainless steel.

These are the articles we have read on this issue;

This may be something for us all to consider in the design of public places and the home in the future to help curb the spread of viruses and bacteria. We already offer our brass range and aged bronze raw and love the way the living finishes patina. lacquers or coatings not only stop the anti bacterial properties but can chip, peel or become discoloured. A raw finish also allows our brass item to be brought back to their original lustre and now it has the added bonus of being anti-bacterial.
